Part 3 of 5: WOLVERINE #187

Well, we seem to have a few months to kill between the end of Frank Tieri's run on Wolverine and the upcoming relaunch.  And that means we have time for a fill-in issue, from Daniel Way (writer of the upcoming Venom) series, and John McCrea (the artist from Hitman, and fairly good fit for Wolverine).

And it's an improvement on Tieri, to be sure.  It's an urban legend riff, basically - Wolverine tracks down the guy who kills hitchhikers, and satisfies his death wish.  On a first read through it's pretty sound.  It's well paced, and McCrea's style is a good fit for the character.  Plus, the ending makes imaginative use of Logan's powers.

The more I think about it, though, the more I wonder quite what the point is.  Although Way reveals the facts in a nicely elaborate way, there's no particularly striking twist - the guy's a murderer, he's got a deathwish, and when all is explained, he's not all that interesting  a character.  The style is pretty impressive, but the substance isn't all that extraordinary.

A middling idea, but quite well done.

Rating: B
