Back in the mainstream Marvel Universe,
"World's End" continues in Uncanny X-Men #457.
We're at the midpoint of the story now, and
my usual antipathy to Savage Land stories is setting in.
It's not that this is a particularly bad story, but the Savage
Land has always struck me as one of those concepts which
really has nothing whatsoever to do with the book. The
X-Men don't really belong in stories about hidden races of
dinosaurs at the South Pole; it's just not what the characters
are about. It's always struck me as more of a Fantastic
Four concept - they're the explorer heroes, after all.
But for some reason the Savage Land seems to have set up a
foothold in the backwaters of the X-Men's mythos as well.
Never really understood it.
Anyhow. It's alright. There's
quite a nice idea about Rachel's powers subconsciously
remodelling her own body, although we really have done this
mind-control idea to death in Claremont books over the last
few years. (Yes, I know she's technically not
mind-controlled, but it's close enough that it still falls
under "overusing the same idea.") The art is lovely, as
you'd expect. Everything looks beautiful when it's drawn
by Alan Davis.
I can't honestly say I'm particularly
engaged by it, but then I've never liked the Savage Land.
Taken on its own terms, it's a perfectly okay piece of
superhero writing, and it looks great.
