The first issue of Wolverine/Captain
America was generic superheroics, but ultimately readable
enough. As a set-up issue, it worked. But the
second issue is really very generic indeed, and my alarm bells
are ringing.
We're halfway through the series now, and
unless it pulls out something very surprising, it's hard to
see this book appealing to anyone but the most conservative of
old-school fans. Generic villains, generic hunt-the-macguffin
plots, and hoary old plot devices abound. (Oh look, the
tunnel divides into three routes! We must split up!)
And if you're going to have Wolverine on
the verge of death, in need of hospitalisation, and with his
healing factor not working, you can't go on to have him do a
four page fight scene. Either he's nearly dead or he
isn't - you can't have it both ways.
Even for the sort of reader who really
wants to see more old-school superhero stories, this is such a
generic example that I can't imagine it being particularly
satisfying. For the most part, it's simply bland rather
than outright bad - but it's very, very bland.
