STORY: "LegionQuest, part 2 of 4: The Killing Time" (23 pages)  Legion and a group of X-Men have travelled back to the past to meet Xavier and Magneto, but have lost their memories in the process.  In the present, the other X-Men enlist Cable to try and make contact with their teammates.

What you need to know:
LegionQuest is a crossover between Uncanny X-Men #320-321 and X-Men vol 2 #40-41, leading into the four-month Age of Apocalypse storyline.  It's a time travel story in which several X-Men travel back in time to the period when Xavier and Magneto were working together in Haifa, Israel, as originally depicted in flashbacks in Uncanny X-Men #161.

The previous chapter, Uncanny X-Men #320, ended with Legion taking Storm, Iceman, Psylocke and Bishop back to the past.  Legion has turned up as a patient in Xavier and Magneto's hospital; the others are hanging around trying to work out what to do.  None of them have any memory of why they're there.  Legion's original plan was to kill Magneto and leave the way clear for Xavier to pursue his dream, but he won't get around to that until he gets his memory back.

In the present, the X-Men enlist Cable's help (because he has time travel equipment).  Meanwhile, Lilandra and the Watchers turn up to hammer home the point that something of cosmic importance is about to happen.

Wolverine turns up back at the Mansion to keep Sabretooth in line.  This is really just a trailer for Wolverine vol 2 #90.

The Israeli newspaper seen in this story is very obviously anachronistic, but only if you can read Hebrew.  Presumably the creators just copied it over from a newspaper without considering that the text on a newspaper was likely to be topical!  It's actually an article about President Clinton speaking in Jordan, during the Israel/Jordan peace talks.  (Thanks to Jonathan Stopek for confirming what the contents.)

Comments:
Back to the crossovers, then.  LegionQuest isn't too bad, though.  It's really just an exercise in building up the tension in preparation for the Age of Apocalypse, and it delivers a reasonably entertaining time travel story while doing it.  Not a classic, but it does the job.

Pet irritant: everyone seems to think it's outrageously unlikely that Psylocke should be an Asian woman with a British accent.  Fifty years ago, perhaps.  That scene has always annoyed me.
