STORY: "The X-Men vs the X-Men!  (Again)" (16 pages)   The X-Men escape Mojo and join forces with the rebel network to overthrow him.

What you need to know:
Mojo II is apparently a "flawed clone" of Mojo.  The flaw seems to be that he has a spine.

The X-Men and Mojo II overthrow Mojo, who dies.  As the leader of a successful rebel movement (unlike Longshot), Mojo II assumes the throne.

Everyone has grave doubts that they can trust Mojo II, and indeed, he did ultimately turn out to be just as bad as the original.  Mojo then returned from the dead and resumed the throne, and the whole thing was pretty much forgotten about.

Dazzler is pregnant with Longshot's child.  The baby was never born (Dazzler had a miscarriage).  In a throwaway line on the last page, Longshot suggests calling it Shatterstar.  That caused a lot of speculation that the kid was supposed to be Shatterstar from X-Force.  In fact, the line was just meant to be a throwaway joke.  Eventually, Shatterstar was given a deliberately contradictory origin and a different real name (Gaveedra-7), which finally laid the question to rest.

Call me a old sceptic if you will, but page 13 doesn't look like Jim Lee artwork to me.  Even at his most rushed, he's got a better grasp of anatomy than that.  At a guess, I'd say it was ghosted by Dan Panosian.

Comments:
This is Jim Lee's final issue, after he decided to leave Marvel and found Image along with Jim Valentino, Rob Liefeld, Dale Keown, Whilce Portacio, Marc Silvestri and Erik Larsen.  Lee's studio, WildStorm, eventually left Image to go its own way, and finally wound up as a subsidiary of DC.  The mass exodus threw the X-books into chaos for a bit, only for them to settle down with Fabian Nicieza writing X-Men and Scott Lobdell on Uncanny.

Lee's closing storyline is decidedly uncharacteristic - you don't really associate him with absurd comedy stories about the Mojoverse.  But he does do a great Mojo, and while this is an odd point to break off from storylines that were clearly only in an early stage, it does at least allow his run to end with a suitable sense of resolution.  Almost everything in this issue has subsequently been brushed aside, but it's still quite good fun.

SECOND STORY: "Over... Again" (7 pages)   Maverick kills Warhawk and Alexander Ryking.

What you need to know:
Maverick mentions that he no longer has his mutant powers.  (He got them back around the time that his solo series started.)

He also mentions at the end that he's not very happy about killing people for a living, though that didn't stop him being flippant in the rest of the story.

Ryking's death isn't entirely clear from this story, but it's clarified next issue when Xavier attends his funeral.

Comments:
Pointless fight scene, really.  Quite amusing for the Mark Texeira art, but that's about it.
