STORY: "Holocaust" (20 pages)
As Kukulcan, El Tigre returns to San Rico and starts to
rebuild his ancient city, enslaving the local descendents of
the Mayans. The X-Men fight him, and Kukulcan
accidentally triggers an earthquake which destroys the city.
El Tigre returns to normal and the X-Men capture him.
What you need to know:
Calvin Rankin turns up at Metro College. Of course,
he doesn't have any memory of fighting the X-Men as the Mimic.
This kicks off an odd little storyline in which the Mimic
becomes the first new member to join the team (only to leave
almost immediately).
Scott finally twigs that Jean likes him
too, and decides to talk to her after the mission. Only
took him three years.
Jean is off at Metro College, so she
doesn't go on this mission.
A more innocent time:
Ramon and Toloc still look decidedly white to me.
Comments:
A definite improvement on the previous issue. The
ancient Mayan stuff is much less jarring than the Latin
American riffs. Actually, the idea of Kukulcan coming
back and enslaving the descendents of the Mayans to repopulate
his city is quite a good one, and Werner Roth does a
reasonably good version of the god.
But it's still nothing to write
home about; we're going through a phase of somewhat
forgettable stuff here.
