Juggernaut - back story

The Juggernaut (Cain Marko) debuted in X-Men vol 1 #12, in 1965.  He hung around as a recurring villain for quite some time before finally changing sides and being inducted into the X-Men during Chuck Austen's run on Uncanny X-Men, almost 40 years after the character was created.

Cain's back story is pretty straightforward compared to some - but he's still acquired a bit of clutter over the years.

X-MEN UNLIMITED vol 1 #13, second story (flashback)
Young Cain Marko attends the Hallowe'en parade in Junction, New York.  He is accompanied by his father, Kurt Marko, and in her only published appearance, his natural mother (unnamed, but Cain calls her "mom").  Cain wanders off and is attacked by bullies, but saved by a girl called Marie.  When Marie tries to comfort him, Cain runs away.  Cain later recalls this event as the occasion when he vowed that "no one would get the best of Cain Marko ever again."

Cain's mother dies.  In X-Men Unlimited vol 1 #12, Cain says that this happened when he was three.  That doesn't match the art in the Juggernaut story in X-Men Unlimited vol 1 #13, however, in which Cain looks at least a couple of years older than that, and his mother's still around.

X-MEN vol 2 #12, page 7 panel 3 (flashback, behind the scenes)
A flashback to Brian Xavier's funeral.  Cain is present off-panel, as revealed in X-Men Forever #4.

X-MEN FOREVER #4, page 11 panel 2 (flashback)
Generic shot of the funeral of Brian Xavier, but this time it establishes that Cain was present.  (He's shown on panel, and he's the one remembering it.)

X-MEN vol 1 #12, p4pn4-6 (flashback, behind the scenes)
More of Brian's funeral, with Cain off-panel.

Kurt Marko marries Sharon Xavier and moves into the X-Men Mansion.  Cain is attending a boarding school, but is soon expelled.

X-MEN vol 1 #12, page 5 panels 4-6 (flashback)
Cain Marko moves into the Xavier Mansion, having been expelled from school.  On meeting Charles Xavier, Cain immediately slugs him.  [Cain acts as though this is the first time he's met Charles, even though they were both at Brian Xavier's funeral.  However, that doesn't mean they actually spoke to one another.]

X-MEN UNLIMITED vol 1 #12, page 22 panel 1 (flashback)
Kurt Marko tells Cain to try and be friends with Charles, "your new stepbrother."

X-MEN UNLIMITED vol 1 #12, page 22 panels 3-4, 6 (flashback)
Cain overhears Kurt telling Sharon that "Charles is gifted in ways we never imagined" and "is going to change the world."  Sharon advises Kurt to devote more time to Cain, as she believes his behaviour is a cry for attention.

X-MEN FOREVER #4, page 11 panel 3 (flashback)
Generic panel of Cain bullying Charles Xavier.

X-MEN FOREVER #4, page 11 panels 4-7 (flashback)
In order to separate the two boys, Kurt takes Cain with him on a three weeks consulting trip to the Eugenics Information Centre in Nevada, a facility actually run by the villain Black Womb.  Cain sulks in his room, until his body is occupied by his own time-travelling future self, despatched from the present day by Prosh.  Cain then sets out to explore the facility.

X-MEN FOREVER #4, pages 10-17
Cain discovers a large number of mutant babies in tanks of fluid, one of which is the infant Toad.  He joins forces with fellow time-traveller Mystique.  In due course, both of them move on to a different timezone, and Cain regains control of his body, experiencing the whole event as a blackout.

X-MEN vol 1 #12, p7pn5 to p8pn4 (flashback)
Charles overhears Cain trying to blackmail Kurt.  Cain alleges that Kurt murdered Brian Xavier.  Charles intervenes and confronts Kurt and Cain.  In the following altercation, Cain knocks over one of Kurt's experiments.  There is an explosion, and the Mansion is set alight.

X-MEN UNLIMITED vol 1 #12, page 24 panels 1-3 (flashback)
Kurt Marko picks up Charles and Cain...

X-MEN vol 1 #12, p8pn5-6 (flashback)
...and carries them to safety.  Kurt warns Charles about Cain, and reveals that he knows about Charles' powers.  Then he dies from his injuries.

X-MEN UNLIMITED vol 1 #12, p24pn4 to p25pn2 (flashback)
Direct continuation, as Cain reacts to Kurt's death.

X-MEN vol 1 #12, page 10 panel 6 to page 11 (flashback)
When Xavier returns home with yet another trophy, Cain flies into a jealous rage and starts to smash Xavier's trophies.  Xavier subdues him with a martial arts chop.

X-MEN vol 1 #12, page 12 panels 2-5 (flashback)
Cain drives Xavier to college after vacation.  Driving recklessly in an attempt to scare Xavier, he crashes.  Xavier makes him jump to safety at the last moment.

X-MEN vol 1 #12, p16pn3 to p16pn1 (flashback)
Cain and Xavier serve together in the Korean War (though more recent flashbacks involving Xavier seem to be laying the groundwork to reassign all of this to Vietnam).  Cain deserts under fire, and Xavier gives chase.  They find the Temple of Cyttorak.  Cain touches the gem and is transformed into the Juggernaut.  The temple caves in, and the Juggernaut is trapped for years to come.

X-MEN FOREVER #3
Still buried, the Juggernaut's body is again possessed by the mind of his future self.

X-MEN FOREVER #4, page 5
While possessed, the Juggernaut claws his way to the surface at long last.

X-MEN vol 1 #11, behind the scenes
Cerebro sets off an alarm as the Juggernaut approaches the X-Men Mansion.

X-MEN vol 1 #12
The Juggernaut attacks the X-Men Mansion.  First published appearance of the Juggernaut.
