Also this week:
HERO SQUARED X-TRA SIZED
SPECIAL - Ah, the Ace Rimmer gag. Top-notch and
irritatingly perfect superhero Captain Valor comes to Earth in
search of his counterpart, so that they can team up against
the supervillain who destroyed his world. Unfortunately,
his counterpart on this world missed his origin story because
he went to the movies instead. He's... a bit of a
disappointment. It's Keith Giffen and J M DeMatteis, in
Justice League mode, and that's all you need to know,
surely? Well, okay - Joe Abraham's doing the art, and
he's more than up to the job. There you go. That's
all you need to know. Go buy it. (If your store
ordered it, which is unlikely unless you pre-ordered it,
because it was published by Atomeka. But so it goes.)

NEW INVADERS #6 -
Officially an "Enemy of the State" tie-in. But it would
really be more accurate to say that it's a gratuitous guest
starring appearance by Wolverine in a desperate attempt to
boost sales on one of Marvel's lowest selling titles.
They've finally changed the artist, which improves matters
somewhat, but this is still thoroughly underwhelming.
Wolverine drops by for a fight, and then heads off again.
And that's pretty much it. Really. C
WANTED #6 - Another
ridiculously late-running miniseries finally concludes - this
one started back in December 2003. It's not bad, but the
twist ending really isn't as clever as it seems to think.
(Basically, having cemented himself as a top-notch
supervillain, the lead character spends the last couple of
pages mocking the audience for being wage slaves who don't
realise that people like him control their lives.)
Wanted is one of the better examples of Mark Millar's
favourite routines, but the defensive "oh, you don't really
enjoy this stuff, do you, how pathetic" tone grates after a
while. B-
Last week's Article 10 is still
up at
Ninth Art.
Next week, it's the comic we've all been waiting for!
The hit of the year! The most anticipated new title
since 1962! Araña: Heart of
the Spider #1!
Don't expect a review of it.
Instead, we've
got the penultimate issue of Mystique; the ghost
storyline finishes off in New X-Men; more Longshot in
Ultimate X-Men; more of the Hellfire Club in Uncanny
X-Men; and the second issue of X-23.
