Also among this week's comics...

CAPER #5 - Okay, this actually came out last week, but I hadn't read it then.  This is the beginning of the second arc of Winick's three-act maxiseries about generations of a criminal family.  We now jump forward to Los Angeles in 1977, and Anastasia Weiss, who isn't a criminal.  Rather, she's a defence lawyer.  Unusually for such characters, she's portrayed as being successful and ethical at the same time, which is a nice change.  It's not quite what I was expecting from this issue, which really moves away from the gangland stuff altogether, but it comes as a pleasant surprise.  Veteran artist John Severin illustrates this arc, and continues to prove that he's not just a legendary name from the past - he's still one of the best storytellers in the business.  A

THANOS #7 - Keith Giffen, of all people, takes over as writer.  The result is a rather strange mixture.  Giffen certainly seems to be making a serious attempt to keep in line with the character direction that Starlin had set up.  On the other hand, there are jokes starting to appear, and the sort of garbled exposition that Giffen's editors really should do something about.  When the entire story hinges on Thanos making a pilgrimage to something called the Crunch, it would help if the concept was explained in vaguely meaningful terms.  ("Expanding universe surge proximity" does not constitute an explanation.)  All told, though, more interesting than I'd expected.  B

Y: THE LAST MAN #20 - Well, we all make mistakes.  This issue concludes the three-part "Safeword" storyline and the less said about this one, the better.  BDSM-themed suicide interventions?  No.  Just... no.  The story wants to be a big moment of character revelation, but it's just too damn silly. Last week's Article 10 is still up at Ninth Art.

Next week... wow, this is a really quiet month for the X-books.  Emma Frost #9 finds Emma still trying to raise money, and Ultimate X-Men #43 continues the New Mutants arc.  And that's it.  New Mutants #10 was rescheduled for next week as well, but doesn't seem to be on the list..
