Part 1 of 8: AGENT X #9

This seems to be another week where the X-books are high on volume, low on significance.  Two actual fill-ins, one book that might as well be a fill-in, Weapon X... it's a grim prospect.  On the plus side, there's an issue of X-Statix.

But we start off with one of the fill-ins, Agent X #9.

And, well, you know.  It's a fill-in.  As with the previous issue, it tends to be more sadistic than regular issues, but it's more or less within the spectrum of reasonable interpretations of the character.  The plot makes passable sense.  The art's perfectly decent.  It's alright.  It's not remotely exciting and it's only there to fill up the pages, which is now redundant given that the book's being cancelled.  But it's alright.

The running joke about the henchman with hooks for hands (after Alex severed them last issue) doesn't work.  There's just too much discrepancy between the level of sadism involved and the blase reactions of everyone involved.  And there's a horribly amateurish opening in which the book does its usual recap page... and then launches straight into a one-page recap in the story itself.  Oops.

Anyway, as fill-ins go, its okay.  You don't need it, you probably don't want it, and the book's being axed soon anyway, so who cares?
